This exhibition asks the viewer to consciously consider the inherent utility present in functional ceramics as well as their dynamic capacity for aesthetic consideration.
The bowls were thrown and altered, becoming progressively asymmetrical. Decoration was limited to the variations of the white slipped surface. Colour accents highlight the autographic marks of the maker. The plates on the walls were fabricated on a RAM Press. An industrial machine engineered for regularity and precision, my use of the RAM Press explored the notion of hand versus machine made and the agency of the individual maker. The motif is derived from an Italian Renaissance pattern. In my examination of historical ceramics, I have become interested in the migration of motifs between cultures, time and place.
